What's a PhreakSkate? A PhreakSkate is a term used first by the Devaskation team to describe a skate assembled from a variety of high-end components from the most reliable manufacturers in the skating industry. Every PhreakSkate is designed to offer affordable performance. We created these skates because we know they will outperform a standard skate produced by a single manufacturer. Many manufacturers have solid performance in different areas, but no single manufacturer produces a complete skate that is superior. We know that just because a product is inexpensive doesn't mean it doesn't perform at a high level. Conversely, an expensive product might not offer the best performance for the skater. PhreakSkates offer a unique opportunity for skaters -- to get the very best components at an affordable price.
How did we Choose the Phreakskate Boots?
We chose Jackson for the majority of the Phreakskates because in day-to-day interactions with customers they like the Jackson boot best. However the Mota boot on the Phreakskate Motavation is probably the highest quality boot on the market today. The Jackson boots tend to fit truer to womens sizes and have a comfortable, moldable feel. Though Jackson hasn't been in the roller skate industry for long, their boots are insanely popular in ice skating. We know this brand is going to explode and once you try the boots you'll agree!
Why did we choose the Pilot Viper Zytel Plate?
We chose the Pilot Viper Zytel plate for the majority of the Phreakskates. Choosing the best all-around plate was difficult, but the Pilot Viper plate makes the most sense. First, we need to give a brief history of the lightweight plate. The plate was developed and designed by Doug and Julie Glass -- World Champion speed skaters, owners of Mota, and developers of some of the very best products in the skating industry today. The Zytel material is lightweight, extremely strong, and most importantly inexpensive. The plate has 16 degree double-action adjustable trucks with high rebound bushings. Even the finest of inventions can have a rough start and this plate was no exception. The 1.0 version of the plate often cracked behind the toe stop and the lightweight Zytel material used to make the plate ended up with a horrible reputation. The plate was redesigned and the 2.0 version of the plate is exactly what the 1.0 version should have been -- Cheap, durable, and AWESOME! This plate has a 1 year manufacturer warranty.
How did we choose the Bearings?
Bearings can be tricky. There are all kinds of materials and ratings to consider. Most people want abec9 bearings because the abec9 rating means that the bearings have the ultimate roll with the least amount of friction possible. Frankly, very few skaters on earth can maximize a rating like that and we're betting you aren't one of them. Most people don't know that abec5 rated bearings can work just fine and they're cheap enough that you can easily toss 'em and start over with a new set next year. Nevertheless, abec7 bearings are what people demand and there is no better value on bearings than those made by Bionic and Moto. We probably would have gone with abec5 if left to our own devices, but peer pressure pushed us to the Bionic abec7's. Have it your way!
How did we choose the wheels?
Each skate is designed for a specific purpose, and the wheels are no exception. The wheels on each Phreakskate will change with technology and as we get more skater feedback about our choices. We choose wheels based on customer satisfaction, manufacturer quality, and cost-to-performance. We are not too concerned with what is currently popular in the market or what looks good on a skate. Phreakskates are designed for performance and value, and the wheels on our Phreakskates fit this mold.
How did we choose the toe stop
Skating fast is fun, but stopping effectively is important. There has been a boom of toe stops in the last two years, but a few brands stand above the rest. The Bionic Bigfoot is huge and effective. The GrnMnstr Gumball is extremely versitile and solid. Finally, the Mota Monster is developed by world champion speedskaters and anything by Mota should be considered premium. The decision on toe stops was fairly easy and the best toe stops are on our Phreakskates.
We couldn't just stop at skates though! You'll also find some amazing bundles that mix the best of a variety of brands so that you can get the awesome gear you need at an amazing price!
